Hundreds of visitors toured the homes of 37 Standard Solar customers this past weekend as part of the 20th annual Metro Washington DC Tour of Solar Homes and Buildings and the first Western Maryland Solar Tour. What a great way to kick off National Energy Awareness Month!

The team from Standard Solar was out in force, with more than 10 employees spread throughout the region to help support our customers on the tour. One especially popular home was the Speer’s home in Lorton, VA. The Speer house which has its own website (http://speerhouse.org/ – very cool) has a 4.2kW solar system. Here is a picture from its website…

Another happy customer who participated in this year’s tour was Barbara Good of Silver Spring, MD. Ms. Good’s system was featured on Saturday of the two day tour and showed off her 2.94kW installation. Good’s system, installed in 2007, cut her utility costs by nearly half. When asked about Standard Solar’s installation three years ago, Good simply said it “went without a hitch!”

The tours showed off homes with various solar designs, green technologies and sustainable living concepts. They included buildings in suburban DC, Frederick and Washington counties and West Virginia – including farms, a pharmacy and an historic renovation.

One group on the tour in particular was keeping with the theme of staying green, forgoing their cars and traveling to various homes in Arlington, VA on their bicycles instead.

Another GREAT Washington DC Solar Tour and a GREAT first Western Maryland Tour! We look forward to more and more Standard Solar customer houses on these tours in 2011!
